Hello, beautiful! We couldn’t be more excited about having Golden Globe–nominee and outspoken Mother Earth advocate Shailene Woodley grace InStyle’s June cover—in a floral bouquet Dolce & Gabbana dress, no less. If you somehow missed her badass and physically powerful performance opposite Theo James in Divergent earlier this year, make a point to catch her in The Fault in Our Stars, a love story that defines a generation (“Bring tissues,” Woodley advises).
The movie opens June 6 and is about two teens, played by Woodley and newcomer Ansel Elgort, who meet in a cancer support group. It’s a role that Woodley fought hard to get, she tells our cover story writer Sara Vilkomerson, and she even wrote a massive fan letter to the author of the original book, John Green. No surprise, the talented actress landed the part of cancer-stricken Hazel (the role required that Woodley chop off her long locks—she donated them to the nonprofit Children with Hair Loss).
Ultimately, she gleaned more from the entire experience than she anticipated. “It changed my whole life and put things in perspective,” Woodley tells Vilkomerson, who met the actress for a three-hour urban trek around West Hollywood. In the story, Woodley admits to confronting her insecurities (and trust us when we say she doesn’t mince words: at one point, she declares, “F— you, lack of confidence!”), shares recipes for her signature homemade beauty products, and reveals her openness toward finding love. “I have zero expectations and zero rules,” she says. We’re fans of her take-me-as-I-am attitude and so is pal Emma Stone who told us, “[She’s] not afraid to express her opinions and beliefs to the public. It’s brave.”
